Whether you are looking for a view, air circulation, or grazing pasture - clear cuts can quickly turn into a mess. If cut in the winter, by the end of the first summer you might not be able to walk through the clearing due to saplings and raspberries. Within 3-5 years saplings can be 10-15 feet tall and in 20 years, 4-6" diameter trees will have begun the regeneration process. Without the stumps and slash gone, you can't brush hog and mow it. Once they are removed, however, all that is needed is a yearly mowing to regenerate healthy grasses and wildflowers. Traditional stumping is expensive and very disruptive to the soil where mulching incorporates biomass into the soil and amends it as well as aerifies the top layer of soil for grasses to take root and thrive.
